Joe Lycett made the most of his Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony role with a savagely funny dig at the government

The Commonwealth Games opened in Birmingham on Thursday, with a ceremony rich in West Midlands culture and featuring local celebrities like Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, Duran Duran, Sir Lenny Henry and adopted local, Malala Yousafzai.

Brummie comedian and TV presenter Joe Lycett – self-described as Birmingham’s answer to Sporty Spice – was tasked with introducing the Asian athletes to the Alexandra Stadium, and he did it in proper Joe Lycett style, with this in no way subtle burn for the government.

I’m going to do something now which the British government doesn’t always do and welcome some foreigners, this time from the region of Asia.

Absolutely bostin’. Viewers loved it.

Finally, he had a message for Priti Patel.

Looks like Joe’s getting a free flight to Rwanda.
