Priti Patel said you can’t blame the government for poverty – only 5 replies you need
It’s not just what she says – well, it is – but it’s also how she says it. Maybe you’ll disagree so have a watch for yourself, Home Secretary Priti Patel explaining why the government’s not to blame for poverty.
Home Secretary Priti Patel tells @NinaWarhurst that high levels of poverty can't be blamed solely on the government. She was visiting Barrow-in-Furness where, according to @CumbriaCC , central wards of the town are some of the most deprived in the country. pic.twitter.com/XgV9cRThGX

That wasn’t BBC North West’s original headline – this was.
“You can’t blame the Government for poverty.” The Home Secretary has been in #Barrow today where Labour has a margin of just 209. Will she win enough voters over? More with @Ninawarhurst tonight. pic.twitter.com/PXYijxCOmW

But they deleted it and changed the headline before putting it out again.
Anyway, Patel’s words are the same. When told on BBC North West that 4 in 10 children in parts of Barrow in Cumbria are born into poverty, here’s some of what she said.
“Well it’s appalling. But of course everybody, and it’s not just people in Westminster, it’s not just at a national level it’s at a local level.
“It’s not the Government though is it? Everybody just says it’s the Government as if it’s this sort of like bland blob that you know, you can just go and blame.
“Because it’s all parts of society and the structures. Local authorities have a role to play, education and public services, which are locally led and locally run.”
And here are the only 5 replies you need.

Poverty is not the fault of government, says Priti Patel with a straight face. In a food bank, in Barrow, where four out of 10 children are in poverty. https://t.co/b89IsQoa7E

Trying to decide whether this response from Priti Patel is the most stupid, the most disingenuous or simply the most evil thing I’ve ever heard from the mouth of a British politician. https://t.co/eo4TufZ7NR

Awful on many levels. 1.Morally – she doesnt give a toss about poor kids. 2. Hypocrisy – Patel has blamed the EU in the past for pretty much everything regardless of truth. 3. It's Lazy – take responsibility and say you'll do something. 4. Spin spin spin – answer the question. https://t.co/OnfivEfOwN
