Priti Patel said you can’t blame the government for poverty – only 5 replies you need

It’s not just what she says – well, it is – but it’s also how she says it. Maybe you’ll disagree so have a watch for yourself, Home Secretary Priti Patel explaining why the government’s not to blame for poverty.

That wasn’t BBC North West’s original headline – this was.

But they deleted it and changed the headline before putting it out again.

Anyway, Patel’s words are the same. When told on BBC North West that 4 in 10 children in parts of Barrow in Cumbria are born into poverty, here’s some of what she said.

“Well it’s appalling. But of course everybody, and it’s not just people in Westminster, it’s not just at a national level it’s at a local level.

“It’s not the Government though is it? Everybody just says it’s the Government as if it’s this sort of like bland blob that you know, you can just go and blame.

“Because it’s all parts of society and the structures. Local authorities have a role to play, education and public services, which are locally led and locally run.”
