This beautiful tale about ‘why dogs are amazing’ is giving people the feels
Here’s a short story to make your day just a little bit better, a tale shared by @maureenjohnson of what happened when they were walking home with their dog Dexy.
A strange and wonderful thing that just happened, to be filed under “why dogs are amazing.” I was walking Dexy, something I do multiple times a day, hundreds of times, along our familiar paths here in NYC. While walking home, after she had passed literally hundreds of people…

…she stopped cold, looked at an older man standing some distance from us, and let out a happy howl–a sound she rarely uses. The AWWOOOOOOO. I looked around to figure out why. We did not know the man, and he was far off.

She refused to budge, except to move in his direction. And he started to come over. Her tail was wagging furiously, and she was happy bark-chatting. (Dex is a hound. She TALKS.) woofWOOFwoofWOOFwoof. When he reached us, she continued chatting away as if they were reunited friends

Again, I was baffled. We do not know this man. He was baffled as well, but happy. “I just lost my dog of 17 years,” he said. “I couldn’t speak I was so sad.” He was tearing up. Dexy is still talking to him NONSTOP. He pet her. I said, “She picked you out of everyone.”

There was something about the man that Dex knew–knew she had to go over and talk to him. He was really moved and said it made his day. It was like some kind of magical starlight barking. She just knew he needed to hang with a dog, and she pulled me a GOOD DISTANCE to get to him.

I am not really a woo woo person, but she KNEW. It was odd. It was amazing. All dogs are good dogs.

I recently lost my 13 year old dog. After many similar interactions with other dogs since then, I believe her spirit visits this way sometimes. One day a passing dog that I don’t know pulled his human up to me on my porch, kissed and booped me and wanted to go in the house. 🥲🥰

Steev did something similar at the airport with this grumpy old guy. He was determined to sit with him and choked himself on his leash to get near him.
I sat alone.
