Gary Lineker made a joke congratulating the Lionesses and so many people didn’t get it, our head hurt
Gary Lineker shared a familiar looking quote in the wake of the Lionesses’ historic 2-1 win over Germany in the finals of the European Championships.
Familiar, but different in one very important regard.
Football is a simple game. 22 women chase a ball for 90 minutes and, at the end, England actually win. Congratulations @lionesses. Fabulous.

It was a reference to what Lineker said after the England men’s team were knocked out of Italia ’90 in the semi-finals by Germany (and England’s habit of always being beaten by the Germans).
“Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win.”
Not this time though. Although it’s fair to say not everyone got the joke …
