Boris Johnson’s reaction to Turkey’s President Erdoğan is the funniest jump scare you’ll see today

The agreement of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey’s president, was crucial to Sweden and Finland being welcomed into NATO, so his presence at the summit that saw the historic move was a positive and cordial one, despite his face in this photo.

He shared a friendlier image.

For a moment, however, Boris Johnson seemed to let his diplomatic mask slip.

The tweet translates as –

‘Sincere moments between President Erdogan and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson: “Hi Friend”.’

It may have been sarcasm.

Perhaps Johnson had a flashback to 2016, when he won £1000 in a Spectator poetry competition, set up in response to Erdoğan bringing an injunction against a comedian for a routine about him.

This was his NSFW prize-winning ode.

There was a young fellow from Ankara,
Who was a terrific wankerer.
Till he sowed his wild oats,
With the help of a goat,
But he didn’t even stop to thankera.

It could have won the ‘Most Offensive Poem’ competition for the assault on the artform alone, but we imagine the Turkish president wasn’t overjoyed with the depiction.

Johnson’s jumpiness drew attention to the clip, and these reactions were our favourites.
