James O’Brien explains how the ‘over-promotion of halfwits’ fed into the current soap opera

Thoughts and prayers go out to senior civil servant Sue Gray, who is currently trying to complete the Whitehall investigation version of cutting the heads off the Hydra, as new issues keep springing up from the old one.

After Dominic Cummings’ insistence that he would testify that the PM was warned about the 20th of May gathering being illegal, Ms Gray will interview the former SpAd as part of the neverending inquiry.

On Tuesday morning, LBC’s James O’Brien tried to put the broader situation into some sort of context, and the resulting rant bordered on the sublime.

It’s seven minutes long, but worth every second.

This explanation of the state of play between Johnson and Cummings shines a light on how closely the corridors of power resemble a soap opera. At least in the UK.

“Through a combination of a ridiculous newspaper industry, the over-promotion of halfwits, a political underclass that have careered to the front benches of the Conservative Party, and the celebration of some of the stupidest people ever to draw breath in Parliament, we’ve ended up with these two men presiding over our nation until the point one of them fell foul of the other’s wife.”

“This is beyond Albert Square.”

It really hit the sweet spot.

We’ll leave the last word to James O’Brien.
