The Pope says it’s selfish to have pets instead of kids – 11 biblical takedowns

For someone in his position, Pope Francis has been fairly small-l liberal, making pronouncements about the role of women, the LGBT community and even contraception that would have had his predecessors bristling – and one of them is still alive, so he probably was bristling.

However, his latest widely reported comment hasn’t upset the right-wing, capitalist, conservative element, but *checks notes* animal-lovers.

During an audience with members of the public, the Guardian reports that he said

“We see a form of selfishness. We see that some people do not want to have a child. Sometimes they have one, and that’s it, but they have dogs and cats that take the place of children.

We lose the richness of fatherhood and motherhood, and it is the country that suffers.”

Does this mean he doesn’t believe in dog?

His comments were greeted on Twitter with great indignation and more than a few direct and indirect accusations of hypocrisy.

These comments nailed it.
