Richard Osman asked how many times people sneeze and it turned out someone keeps a spreadsheet
We’re not entirely sure why Richard Osman asked this question but we’re very glad he did because it unearthed something entirely unexpected.
Ok, I wonder if you can help? How many times do you think you’ve sneezed in your life? Individual sneezes. Give me a yearly estimate without looking at other people’s answers. I think it’s a very, very difficult question.

And there were lots and lots of answers (we guessed 298, since you’re asking), some of them more serious than others.
Bless you for asking.

I’m working on the assumption there are loads of days I haven’t, but clearly a big hayfever day could be a fifteener. I’m pretty sure when you die you get your book of life statistics, peas eaten, bar graph of toilets most often frequented, top speed etc – and it’ll be in there.

300 per year
— Lee Barnard (@_lee_barnard) October 18, 2019
That was my answer too!
— Richard Osman (@richardosman) October 18, 2019
But none of those are the reason we’re here. This is.
This is going to sound REALLY sad, but I’ve been keeping a day-by-day sneeze record since the beginning of 2014. pic.twitter.com/0PRDPxbQWd

And here it is (you’ll have to zoom in to really appreciate it).
That really is nothing to sniff at.
You are kidding? This is GOLD DUST!
— Richard Osman (@richardosman) October 18, 2019
Impressive consistency.

And the spreadsheet man didn’t stop there.
So I just did some basic graphs – I have no idea why I sneezed so much more between 2014-16 than 2017-present.
Also, that one day in February 2015 when I sneezed 24 times, I did indeed have a cold. pic.twitter.com/rVLlr5ELPQ

I'd love to know why
— Max Rushden (@maxrushden) October 18, 2019
Honestly, I was just curious one year how often I'd sneeze so I decided to start keeping a record. Ended up getting into the habit of it and here we are almost 6 years later!
— Ben Harris (@btharris93) October 18, 2019
Except it is an Untitled sheet, so something prepared today, as it's clearly not been saved. I'm sure you would have called in Sneeze Log, as I do with my log
— Daniel Clark (@djmclark) October 18, 2019
It hasn't been prepared today. I am not joking with this, sadly. pic.twitter.com/1u0E9gzgKN

Definitely not a pointless exercise.
