“Boaty McBoatface” will be officially named the Sir David Attenborough today – 12 best reactions
Back when “chaos with Ed Miliband” sounded like a threat, rather than an unattainable dream, the public were asked to make a clear choice on an issue, which they did – before being completely ignored because they’d been idiots.
Yes – the opportunity to name a polar exploration ship went a bit off course when the public came up with the name Boaty McBoatface and overwhelmingly voted for it. The powers that be decided to use the second choice, “Sir David Attenborough”, keeping the quirkier name for a small remotely operated submarine which will be part of the larger ship’s equipment.
The vessels are finally ready to be named, which will take place at the Cammell Laird shipyard on Merseyside, in the presence of the aforementioned legendary Sir David, as well as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. With Boaty back in the news, Twitter has jumped onboard – not literally.
What's that trending on twitter? Oh it's me! Thank you everyone for your support #BoatyMcBoatface forever

This is the ship that a majority of those voting wanted to call Boaty McBoatface.
But that was a really stupid idea which would have made us a global laughingstock.
So we didn’t do it. https://t.co/hBg88HP4GX— Flip Chart Rick, Esq 🕷 (@FlipChartRick) September 26, 2019

More people voted to name the RRS David Attenborough “Boaty McBoatface” than elected Boris Johnson as leader of the Conservative Party. That’s a fun fact about democracy.

The Sir David Attenborough is officially named today. The advisory public vote to call it Boaty McBoatface was ignored because it was deemed a stupid idea that would make the UK look foolish. Morning, @BorisJohnson.

Remember when the most embarrassing thing the UK may have done was to try and name a ship Boaty McBoatface ?

Lots of people drawing a parallel between Boaty McBoatface and Brexit. I'm suggesting a compromise in which we go with the hilarious boat name but drop the ridiculously damaging nationalism. Deal? Deal. Great. Let's move forward with this.

It shows how messed up out country is that the powers that be insists – ridiculously- to call a ship the Sir David Attenborough instead of its proper name, Boaty McBoatface
Maybe we should call David Attenborough Boaty McBoatface instead

Why isn't the Boaty McBoatface vote being honoured?
The Will of The People is being betrayed.

Boaty McBoatFace won with over 124k votes.
However realising it was stupid, they named it after the 5th place entry.
Just because people vote for something, it needs to be taken with a dose of sensibility to figure out if it should be acted on.#brexit

Boaty McBoatface won the popular vote but they didn't do it because it was a bad idea. That's all the precedent needed to ignore the #Brexit vote. 🇬🇧 https://t.co/gdfR2zZb3P

There's something to be said for commonsense prevailing and overriding the verdict of a public vote to avoid being a laughing stock.https://t.co/33FJU2uvnR

Let us not forget Boaty Mc Boatface won over 60 percent of the public vote without any illegal overspending. #fbpe #StopTheCoup #StopBrexitSaveBritain https://t.co/Y7utoJf3g9

We think broadcaster Dan Howdle was probably on the money when he posted this.
Despite writing one name on the side of this boat, it will forever be known by another to the end of its days. They should have just caved… https://t.co/orpNZyCGs3
