A bigger brain than ours spotted this on the Alan Turing £50 note and it’s a lovely touch
As you will have no doubt seen by now, computer pioneer and codebreaker Alan Turing will appear on the Bank of England’s new £50 note design.
Bank of England governor Mark Carney said Turing, given a posthumous royal pardon six years ago for his 1952 conviction for gross indecency, was ‘an outstanding mathematician whose work has had an enormous impact on how we live today’.
Here are just some of the things people were saying about it today.
Brilliant news from the Bank of England: War-time code breaker,Alan Turing is the face on the £50 note (not that you or I will ever see one!), Has ever a man been be more celebrated in death..how tragic that he suffered at the hands of bigots in life.

This is such a powerful statement. Britain retained its freedom because of the genius of Alan Turing, but took away his freedom because of his sexuality. 65 years after his death and he is recognised on the £50 note as the very best of us.https://t.co/dzS63fhdd2

While I’m disappointed to have been overlooked, it’s wonderful that Alan Turing is being recognised. The world owes that man a huge debt and this gesture is a significant marker in the UK’s relationship with persecuted minoritieshttps://t.co/S2xoCUyKUq

It's appropriate that Alan Turing will be the new face of the £50 note, because just like his work during the war it's very valuable but nobody will ever see it.

But this might be our favourite thing, spotted on the new note by Dan Barker.
I just got a nice little shiver when working out whether the binary on the ribbon of the new £50 banknote meant anything.
1010111111110010110011000 is 23061912 in decimal. Alan Turing was born on the 23rd June 1912. What a nice touch.
RIP, Alan. pic.twitter.com/BUXzrT31FY
