The best objections to a black Little Mermaid are the ones using ‘mermaid science’ to make their case
As you’ll have seen by now lots of people aren’t happy that the lead role in Disney’s live action Little Mermaid will be played by black singer and actress, Halle Bailey.
But the best objections – and by best we mean completely and utterly extraordinary and totally hatstand – are the ones quoting ‘mermaid science’ to back up their objections.

And this person.
They were helpfully highlighted on Twitter by Hello Gillian.
They’ve got a point. Every other element of The Little Mermaid story is based on scientific principles so this is the obvious exception to have a row about.

This science assumes that mermaids are unable to come to the surface to sunbathe, going against established canon… pic.twitter.com/IJtTeDgGcR

Do they have sun lotion under the sea?

Yes, it mentions it in Sebastian’s song:
Under the sea
Wearing Factor Fifty
And aloe vera
It couldn’t be clearer

I’m especially interested in how they’re certain about the depth at which mermaids live.

Aye, too deep and she’d explode the minute she flopped on dry land.
