This creepy mechanical nurse is raising people’s blood pressures

Guy’s Hospital, in London, has a unique fundraising collection box in the form of a mechanical nurse, who rotates with an outstretched begging cup into which visitors try to drop coins as it goes by. The payoff is both spectacular and disturbing.

Installed by the incredible Tim Hunkin, cartoonist, engineer and creator of amazing automata like this, the nurse has been coining it in since 2003, but she was a new experience for Jessica Crisp, who was a bit freaked out.

Her post has had a lot of attention – much of it from people who may have trouble sleeping tonight, and who now have a phobia of hospitals.

Let’s face it, that wouldn’t be the worst thing Jeremy Hunt’s ever done to the NHS.
