The Game of Thrones coffee cup isn’t the only on-screen anachronism – 11 other historical cock-ups
Whether you’re avoiding spoilers or not even watching the programme, you must be aware of the errant disposable coffee cup that appeared in the latest episode of Game of Thrones. Although it has now been edited out of the scene, it was spotted and ridiculed by far too many viewers for them to pretend it didn’t happen.

But it isn’t the first time something hasn’t looked quite right for the period of a film or TV show, and these are the nine best that people have spotted.
Some anachronisms would only be obvious if you were in the know.
1.
Braveheart
Set in the 13th century, while kilts were introduced in the late 16th century
2.
Forrest Gump
Forrest and Lieutenant Dan bought their shares in Apple in 1975, five years before they were available.
3.
Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves
That telescope wasn’t even invented until around 400 years after the film was set.
4.
Red Dragon
The doomed Leeds family from the 80s-set thriller own a copy of Mrs Doubtfire, which came out in 1993.
5.
Dallas Buyers Club
Although the film is set in the mid-80s, the Lamborghini Aventador on the poster wasn’t produced until 2011.

6.
Back to the Future
Marty’s Gibson ES-345 wouldn’t have existed until three years after the 1955 date of that section of the film.
Some others were a little more obvious.
7.
Gladiator
One of the crowd in second-century Rome is wearing jeans and a T-shirt.

8.
Glory
One of the soldiers in the American Civil War epic is wearing a decidedly inappropriate digital watch.
9.
Downton Abbey
A modern plastic bottle is clearly visible in this publicity shot from the Edwardian drama.

10.
Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl
There’s a bloke in a cowboy hat and T-shirt on the Black Pearl, just chilling with the pirates.

11.
Bernie
Jack Black’s murderous character has an iPhone in 1996 – which must be where Steve Jobs got the idea to invent them in time for their release in 2007.
