11 of the most WTF fashion controversies

On the internet, you’re never more than six clicks from a weird fashion controversy, as we’ve been reminded recently by Burberry’s noose hoodie and the Gucci sweater that seemed to have been inspired by blackface. We decided to remind ourselves – and you – what other controversies had strutted their stuff in the fashion world – and this is the NSFW collection we found.

1. The children’s T-shirt from Zara that bore a worrying resemblance to clothing worn in concentration camps during the Holocaust.

2. Zara – again – this time with a bag sporting swastikas.

3. Katy Perry’s shoes that looked like they were meant to be paired with the Gucci sweater.

4. Rick Owens’ penis peephole tunics – probably convenient at the urinals, less so if there’s a bit of a cold breeze.

5. Revolve’s apparently fat-shaming sweatshirt, which was meant to highlight the trolling faced by women and quoted an insult that had been levelled at plus-size model Paloma Elsesser. Unfortunately, in isolation, it wasn’t a good look.

6. Diesel’s homophobic slur jacket – yes, they went there.

7. H&M’s children’s sweatshirt that caused a controversy because they chose a black model to wear the legend “Coolest monkey in the jungle”.

8. Adidas’ trainers with built-in shackles, leading to accusations of capitalising on the imagery of slavery.

via

9. J.C. Penney’s sexist girls’ top, which seemed to suggest that females aren’t intelligent.

10. H&M [again] with a skull in a Star of David – a combination often used as an anti-semitic statement.

11. Prada’s “Pradamalia” figure, accused of resembling blackface.

If you’re reeling at the thought of these designs passing through several stages of production without anyone saying “Hang on a minute!” remember they came from the same world that thought this print advert was a good idea.

Enough said.
