This Tory MP claimed Bird Box was like no-deal Brexit scaremongering

Ben Bradley, the Conservative MP for Mansfield, isn’t known for being the voice of reason – he once accused Jeremy Corbyn of being an actual spy and also suggested poor people should have vasectomies.

So, it’s no great surprise that he has compared people’s legitimate fears about the prospect of the UK crashing out of the EU with a disaster movie about aliens that make people suicidal.

He was obviously pretty smug about his analogy, because he also raised it in Parliament, saying this:

“Last night, I watched Bird Box on Netflix with my wife, in which strangers’ voices kind of sweep in on the wind and make people kill themselves. I wondered whether it might be a documentary on the impact of a no-deal Brexit, funded by Lord Adonis, Alastair Campbell or somebody along those lines.

The level of scaremongering on this subject has been absolutely unbelievable. In fact, it has got so ridiculous that most people simply do not believe it; they discount it, and it serves only to harden the attitude that we should leave regardless.”

He clearly didn’t pay that much attention or he would have realised that a blindfold wouldn’t be the best protection against a situation where “strangers’ voices kind of sweep in on the wind and make people kill themselves”, but that’s another matter. People weren’t impressed by his dismissive tweet.

He wasn’t the only one to make that link.

It’s nonsense really. What could a dystopian society in which people do everything they can to avoid seeing what’s right in front of them have to do with a Brexiter?
