Stephen Mangan started a debate about what you call the end of a loaf and now he probably wishes he hadn’t
Actor Stephen Mangan was moved to share on Twitter what he calls the end bits of a loaf of bread.
It all started when comedian Romesh Ranganathan said this.
My wife’s insistence that the end of the loaf makes acceptable toast will be the reason we split.
— Romesh Ranganathan (@RomeshRanga) December 9, 2018
And Mangan joined in with this.
I always use the end of the loaf when making toast. This quiet and selfless act of heroism goes completely unnoticed https://t.co/z8glqXXMS6

It was at this point that it really began to kick off.
@StephenMangan What do you call them. I call them “outsiders” (Scottish) my Welsh partner calls them@“Enders”?
— Karen Lynn (@titchlynn) December 9, 2018
The heel https://t.co/6sC9u746iI
— Stephen Mangan (@StephenMangan) December 9, 2018
Shocked that anyone calls it anything other than the Crust.
Bunch of weirdos.— Who Hell He? (@lushattic) December 9, 2018
We call them nobbies. Don’t know why, it’s just what my parents always call them, so we do too…
— Kim Barrett (@KimBarrett8) December 9, 2018
The crust is the surface of a loaf. The heel is the end slice. I’ll fight anyone who says any different https://t.co/R82lyWvLpq

‘I’ll fight anyone who says any different’? That’s fighting talk. Especially when you’re wrong. Of course it’s the crust; it’s a big slice of crust!
— Jamie Bird (@bebirdo) December 9, 2018
And you’re a big slice of wrong but your name is Jamie. https://t.co/xuBGUKjMjF
— Stephen Mangan (@StephenMangan) December 9, 2018
sorry it’s the knobby
— Vince (@vinc3h4ll) December 9, 2018
In our house, it’s the ‘nob-end’
— F for Festive A Y E (@FayeTanner18) December 9, 2018
the end is the nub. End of.
— Jamie (@jamiebolton77) December 9, 2018
Only people who say ‘end of’ say nob. https://t.co/8coaeehAlr
— Stephen Mangan (@StephenMangan) December 9, 2018
What kind of shoes does it wear if it has two heels?
— No one you know (@t_oriordan) December 9, 2018
Loafers https://t.co/s00GF2KXwY
— Stephen Mangan (@StephenMangan) December 9, 2018
By this point Mangan had (almost) taken enough.
So the end slice of a loaf is (according to you weirdos) – the knobby, knobby end, knob end, nobbly, knobbler, norbert, doormat, topper, nut end, noggie, noggin, ender, crust, butt, outsider, tush, doorstep, bumper, healie, nub, bum, bum end, knocker [all wrong] or heel [correct]
