A Tory MP said this and the takedowns were savage – our 11 favourite responses
In some ways, social media has helped politicians connect with the voters and gauge public opinion more accurately – in other ways, it’s allowed them to make complete fools of themselves in a horribly public forum. Andrea Jenkyns, Conservative MP for Morley and Outwood ticked that second box quite comprehensively when she posted this on Twitter.
On the train with my toddler Clifford. Busy train & a lady with a young baby was sat on the floor. Nobody offered her a seat. So gave her mine. When I was brought up we were taught to give up our seat for the elderly, pregnant or those with children. What is happening to society!

Yet, it’s the Left who are always being accused of virtue signalling.
There were some who agreed with her assessment.
No respect anymore. Must blame parents aswell as the young nowadays

Unfortunately it’s is mostly due to Parents not teaching their children respect & basic good manners. I see it constantly on Public transport & elsewhere

However, these 11 people didn’t see it in quite the same light.

Tories: Consistently voting to plunge families into poverty then giving up a seat on the train once and thinking they have the moral high ground pic.twitter.com/QjyUVOoFoy

Well, presuming your mythical golden age of manners actually existed, you lot have been in charge of society for 30 of the last 47 years, so perhaps it’s your fault. https://t.co/nKMElc8F4H

It's almost as though your party spent the last 40 years encouraging a fuck you I'm alright Jack society, isn't it? https://t.co/8G4n1vJoKr

Oh god, not this again. This notion the past was a place of perfect manners & upright decency is entirely bogus. Occasionally we will witness bad behaviour. Society is not disintegrating https://t.co/yxB5J85dKy

I see people give up their seats on the bus every single time I use it. My kids and the majority of their peers have impeccable manners. Maybe you just attract arseholes? https://t.co/eHRno6z91h

A small group of wealthy people spotted an opportunity to cause division in society for their own financial and political gains
Along the way, they suckered in some dopey ideologues who thrived on using terms like "traitor" and "enemy of the people"
Sound like anyone you know? https://t.co/TQhyvzLEza

There are always selfish people. But I commuted on the tube through two pregnancies and the people most likely to offer a seat were teenage lads in hoodies, builders and young women. It was the middle class men in suits who rarely did. They're your societal problem. https://t.co/B9A3W9FpT8

Tories, that's what.
They lie in parliament, misleading the house, they evade prosecution for their crimes, they evade payment of tax, they kill the poor, sick & disabled.
If you want a good society you have to lead by example & invest.

Oh… Is it the double whammy of a Government who has taught us it's every man for themselves coupled with the chronic underfunding of the rail network…?

Margaret Thatcher said “There's no such thing as society” in a 1987 interview with ‘Women’s Own’. I think that might be “What’s happened”? https://t.co/JvyF1FxlTd

One Twitter user noticed a very different problem.
the most disgraceful part of this is that she called her baby Clifford https://t.co/ZYqqffvzR8
