Iceland’s Christmas advert has been banned for being too political – Can you see why?

It’s at this time of year that the companies begin their battle for the hearts and minds of shoppers, in the hope that it will translate into their pounds and pence shortly afterwards. We know that John Lewis will get the tear ducts going, while Aldi has already made us laugh, but we won’t be watching frozen food company, Iceland‘s ad on TV, because it has been banned for being too political.

You can watch it here. “Say hello to Rang-tan.”

It tells the story of the destruction of orangutan habitat for the collection of palm oil – a substance being eliminated from Iceland’s own-brand products – via a cute animation, with a poem beautifully voiced by Dame Emma Thompson.

The video is racking up the views on YouTube and also on Twitter where it’s being shared with the hashtag #NoPalmOilChristmas. With the interest generated by the ban, it may end up with a wider audience than if it had been allowed to run on TV.
