This announcement on a Chinese bullet train is a terrifying vision of a dystopian future (and it’s straight out of Black Mirror)
Journalist James O’Malley was travelling on the Beijing to Shanghai bullet train when this announcement came over the public address system.
It made such an impression on him that the next time it happened he made sure he recorded it and shared it on Twitter.
This is James said about it.
Here’s a dystopian vision of the future: A real announcement I recorded on the Beijing-Shanghai bullet train. (I’ve subtitled it so you can watch in silence.)
And this is the announcement.

‘Dear passengers
People who travel without a ticket or behave disorderly or smoke in public areas will be punished according to regulations and the behaviour will be recorded in individual credit information system.
To avoid a negative record of personal credit please follow the relevant regulations and help with the orders the train and at the station.’
The video went madly viral and here are a few of the things people are saying about it.

Pretty sure #BlackMirror called this one. And, as @GreatDismal said: "The future is already here — it's just not very evenly distributed." https://t.co/UcVVkrpSQl

This is why my dystopian scifi novel is based on China. I didn't have to research much. https://t.co/iFpuUBDKKO

What this guy said.
China's social credit system gives foresight into the natural evolution of modern day surveillance states. Those in control will act to maintain and expand their power, you should expect it.
Distributed censorship resistant tools provide the only real check on this power. https://t.co/oyrXnTfC6f

And then there was this.
Ironic Update: My tweet implicitly warning about the danger of a social system that values people based on an abstract score has done some good numbers and has increased my Twitter follower count, thus has slightly increasing my social status on here.
