If you’re afraid of heights, this classic Blue Peter clip will give you nightmares
As Blue Peter turns 60, everyone’s talking about their favourite presenter, their favourite clip and how they’d have done almost anything to get a Blue Peter badge. This clip of John Noakes climbing Nelson’s Column without a safety harness or a helmet – and all so he can clean up pigeon poo – is a health and safety expert’s worst nightmare.
See for yourself.
#OTD 1977: John Noakes scaled Nelson's Column, on a wobbly ladder… with no safety harness…and no helmet…wearing flares… to clean some pigeon poo. Don't try this. Anywhere. Ever. pic.twitter.com/J5NfUvZQPA

The quality isn’t great, but you can still get a sense of what a dangerous stunt it really was and we’re certain they wouldn’t let anyone try that now.
When the BBC asked people to nominate their favourite presenters, Twitter user Terry Smith said this – and we can’t argue with it.
John Noakes, absolutely no question. The bloke climbed Nelson’s column wearing flares and an army jacket for God’s sake ! pic.twitter.com/3pmltVCQmK
