People have been paying tribute to Rainbow presenter Geoffrey Hayes who has died aged 76.

But of all the tributes this might be our favourite.

And in case that’s a bit tricky to read …

Dear Rachel

Many thanks for your letter and Christmas card. So sorry not to have replied to your letter sooner but have been away working and then straight into panto rehearsals.

Yes it is rather odd to see all the Rainbow merchandise in the shops – even more than when Rainbow was on TV! But in some ways I’m not surprised, as from the people who stop me in the street, Rainbow has great fond memories for so many people. I understand the website is hit many times a day from around the world – not only in Britain.

Yes I’m very well thank you and still working in showbiz, despite what you might read in the press. Next month I celebrate 40 years in the business.

Like you I’ll be working through Christmas although I do get Xmas Day with my family. Have yourself a great Christmas and all the very best to you for 2002.

Best wishes

Geoffrey

And here he is, talking to Stewart Lee and Richard Herring, about his departure from Rainbow.

RIP Geoffrey.
