Did Alison Moyet have the most civilised Brexit discussion the internet has ever seen?
If there’s one thing guaranteed to start a row on the internet – and there is – it’s Brexit. In fact, Brexit, the EU, anything to do with the original referendum, the prospect of a second referendum – oh, and Jaffa Cakes – are all likely to bring down Trollmageddon on any brave or foolish enough to mention them.
So, when singer Alison Moyet recently shared her opinion on having a referendum on whatever Brexit deal the negotiators hammer out, she must have been prepared for some strongly worded replies.
This is what she said.
If the will of the people is Brexit, no leaver should fear a second referendum.

Of course, not everyone agreed.
Let me speak slowly, so you can understand. And I'll place it in capitals so you can see it clearly.
WE HAVE NOT ENACTED THE REFERENDUM YET. YOU ARE SUBVERTING THE RESULT AND DEMANDING A SECOND VOTE BECAUSE YOU DO NOT LIKE THE OUTCOME. THAT IS A DISGRACE.
Hope that helps. x https://t.co/hVJj4FRSxl

Bollocks, it wasn't best of three!! https://t.co/m0K34otxAG

But one woman simply responded with a question.
Why ☹️

And they then had what normal society calls “a polite debate” and Twitter calls – no, wait – Twitter doesn’t call it anything because it doesn’t know what it is.
Because it’s great getting to choose when you know what the options are. That’s why we ask for menus.

Alison if that is really you, I am a huge fan and I love your music so much but don’t you think having all these debated is too much…. Its been voted on to leave.. So let’s just leave please ☹️ x
— Claire (@50Claire) August 2, 2018
Dear thing. There is new information and understanding. On such a vital issue that affects my children as well as yours, isn’t it wise to be certain? If the majority wish to leave, given the better understanding we have of what it means, then leave we shall, and no complaint.

I guess you are right Alison… If a job needs doing, let’s make sure it is done correctly… I appologise x x
— Claire (@50Claire) August 2, 2018
Don’t apologise. It’s perfectly reasonable you stand your corner xx
— Alison Moyet (@AlisonMoyet) August 2, 2018
See – it can be done. People loved how the conversation had played out.
I wish twitter was always like this

So do I, this thread is refreshingly civilised, quite convivial – just as it should be

I second this, finally an adult-adult debate with listening on all sides. Well done all #respect #whatevertheoutcome

Of course, as someone who isn’t afraid to speak her mind, Alison is used to opposition on Twitter and generally handles it with good grace, even when it’s a Twitter pile-on because she’s complained about flies, which you can read about here.
We’d love to think that this exchange heralded a more reasonable approach to internet debates, but we’re not putting money on it.
