Robert Peston noticed something about the 12 best paid people at the BBC and he wasn’t alone
The BBC has published the salaries of its biggest-earning stars today and Robert Peston noticed something.
This is definitely a spoof. All men. All white. Simply not possible pic.twitter.com/1utveDjfxl

He wasn’t alone of course at a time when the BBC has made talking pay inequality one of its top priorities.
Here’s what people made of it online (including one or two people you might have heard of).

Either the BBC men are all just so much better than all the BBC women or this is persistent sex discrimination. It’s the latter, of course. No more excuses now. Where is the target date by which BBC commits to 50:50 men and women in this list? Actions not words! https://t.co/IIwG8nOpkR

Hi Jugs @GaryLineker, congrats on winning the BBC high earner trophy. Well deserved.
But I presume you're outraged all the Top12 are white men, given this is a publicly-funded company that preaches diversity/equality? pic.twitter.com/ToMWqmlcRf— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 11, 2018

People will argue that Lineker could earn more than £1.75m a year at a commercial rival. He probably could. But the prestige of working for the BBC still trumps that – and also enhances his brand value. Plus, MOTD would survive pretty well without him.

Jugs is worth that money & could earn a lot more outside the BBC – he's the best at what he does.
But for the Top12 highest earners at the BBC to ALL be white men is ridiculous given the Corporation's relentless preaching about diversity/equality. https://t.co/eBF4Ef62JS— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 11, 2018

Last year, the BBC’s top 7 earners were ALL men. This year, it’s the top 12. Disgraceful that we seem to be going backwards in the drive for pay equality. BBC need to do much more to make sure women are paid fairly. https://t.co/czub37YCZO

Big challenge for BBC over talent pay gender divide is how to tackle huge chasm between men and women at the very top end of the scale. Only two women in 20 highest paid stars. Will be easier to address lower down but highest paid men miles away from highest paid females.
