Comedian Nish Kumar shared this story on Twitter and it went viral because it contained a delightfully unexpected twist.
Well, perhaps it wasn’t unexpected to everybody. Have a read for yourself.
1.
THREAD: I saw something yesterday that if I read on this website I would assume was a lie made up by an absolute tool. Watched the England game and then hopped on a train home. A bunch of England fans got on and were singing loudly. Already on the train were a Muslim family.

2.
There were two older girls in hijabs and two younger girls, one of whom was wearing an England football shirt. When she saw the England fans get on in their England shirts, the girl looked absolutely delighted. I was utterly terrified.

One of them went over and double high fived the girl and then everyone started singing "Three Lions". It was a properly great moment and wanted to photograph it, print out the photos and then shove it in the mouths of people who think multiculturalism is a problem or impossible.

Obviously immigrants & their children shouldn't have to prove themselves in any way and no one obliged to support anyone and nationalism is pointless and idiotic. But what got me was the girl. She saw herself as an England fan & the England fans saw her as one of them.

5.
And that was great. Especially with everything that's going on and the racist shit being thrown at Raheem Sterling. It was just nice to see someone who considered themselves an England fan be accepted by that group.

6.
Because I was that kid & circumstance has dulled that sense as I've got older. Also I post negative shit here all the time and I thought it would be nice to share a good news story.

7.
And anyway, about five minutes later one of the fans confused me for @RomeshRanga later in the journey. So normal service was resumed. END THREAD GOODBYE.

And this is what people made of it online.
It’s called unconscious bias. You made an assumption about the behaviour of a group of people you ore judged. Glad they were able to show you that, in the main, white people and football fans are nice people.
— Dave Rackliff (@DaveRackliff) July 4, 2018
Yeah, it's not really unconscious bias if it's a legitimate expectation based on expressed behaviour of sections of that group. pic.twitter.com/czmmHaHv77

Thank you. Was just about to point out the unbearably smug tone of that tweet. It is rational to fear racism, given, you know, reality.

Good thread, Nish. Happens more often than we think. Worried how your story would go!

Aw thanks for sharing this. At the start my heart kind of sank, as I thought it was going a different way (which sounds like it was your experience too, as you watched it all unfold.)

People tend to find everything different about each other but when they find something in common they forget the things that made them different to each other in the first place.
