How BBC News covered England’s penalty shootout was wonderfully surreal
The BBC didn’t have the rights to last night’s England game against Colombia but its news channel was on air while the World Cup drama was taking place.
Viewers were still able to tell what was going on, however, because this happened and it’s rather brilliant.

Perfect! I mean, we preferred ITV’s coverage obviously, but it’s still a rather lovely moment for the 3 people and a dog who were watching the BBC News channel.
This means they were watching ITV! #ENGvCOL #BBCOS
