Man dressed as a shark gets bitten by Austria’s new burqa ban

A man dressed as a shark who was advertising the opening of a new electronics store called “McShark” has been fined under new anti-burqa laws in Austria, reports DW.

The mascot was standing outside a the shop in Vienna when he was asked by police to remove his shark head – when he refused he was issued with a fine, which can be up to £130.

Advertising agency Warda Network revealed the run-in with the police in a post on their Facebook page.

Local paper Österreich said the police acted after a member of the public reported the shark – they suspect the report was made by someone who wanted to make a point about the new laws, which are worded in such a way to be religiously-neutral, but have led to widespread confusion – recently a cyclist was stopped by police for covering her face with a scarf.
