Guess which Lincolnshire town resulted in a British band getting censored on Facebook?

The cruel censors at Facebook have stopped a British band called October Drift from plugging their upcoming gig in a small North Lincolnshire town.

The band were attempting to promote a gig in the “Industrial Garden Town”, better known as Scunthorpe – but fell foul of Facebook’s censorship rules because the town’s name has a rude word hidden in it. You can work it out yourself. October Drift posted a video to express their dismay.

We tried to boost our posts to promote the Scunthorpe show, but Facebook is having none of it due to the town name…

It isn’t the first time people have been censored online for mentioning Scunthorpe, it’s problem that can be traced back to 1996 with the AOL obscenity filter. The issue has its own Wikipedia page and has even been raised with the Facebook help community.

Facebook hasn’t said if it will change its censorship filter to let people mention Scunthorpe in future. Perhaps it isn’t a censorship problem – perhaps it’s down to the fact that Mark Zuckerberg personally hates the town after visiting the Britannia Bar and Night Club in 2014 and couldn’t handle his snakebite and black.
