Kofi Annan brings cupcakes to Syria crisis talks

Middle East Cake News: UN and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan has brought cupcakes to the latest round of Syria crisis talks, in an attempt to smooth things over and gain support for his peace plan.

The cupcakes were brought out during talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad this weekend which he described as ‘constructive and delicious’.

After bringing a hamper of Bakewell Tarts to a meeting with Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in Tehran on Friday, Mr Annan said he was seeking Iran’s ‘support and co-operation’ to resolve the crisis – though he also remarked that he was ‘concerned’ that Mr Salehi made it clear ‘he did not like glace cherries’.

Later, Mr Annan touched down in Baghdad for a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki. It is not thought he brought any home-baked goods to this meeting as the jet he flew in on did not have a suitable oven.
