Censorship latest: tweets to be reduced to 2 characters

Tech News: Following Thailand’s endorsement of the censorship of certain messages on Twitter, the social micro-blogging network site has announced increased restrictions to its service. Messages on Twitter, up until now, have been restricted to 140 characters but with new regulations taking place at midnight GMT tonight, each tweet will only be permitted two characters.

In Thailand, this has already been “successfully trialled” according to an anonymous spokesman, although some users have been forced to flee to facebook to lament the loss of 138 of their allocated characters.

“People don’t even know who I’m re-tweeting” complained Ti Loo Ray Lensawn, “I get as far as ‘RT’ and it’s all over”.

It remains to be seen how these new measures will affect the popularity of Twitter.

Stephen Fry, a leading exponent of the website, posted a new message earlier today. He said “LO”.

Debate rages on in the microblogging community about whether he had wanted to write “LOL” or “LORDY, WHAT NEXT?” or “LOOK OUT BELGIUM, HERE I COME”. Although the debate is pretty limited to messages like “??”
