With a rebel victory coming ever closer, Europe was the first to offer support to the new democratic government of Libya, assembling a taskforce of diplomatic and economic advisers to help the National Transitional Council stabilize their shattered economy.

But rebel Libyan officials told Cameron, Sarkozy and Merkel this morning: ‘no offence, but no thanks’.

That’s not the kind of help we need right now,” said Abdel Hafiz Gogha of the National Transitional Council.

The air strikes were great. You lot obviously know how to handle that stuff – but when it comes to your economic management skills, we need that kind of assistance like we need a hole in the head. I think we can take it from here, alright?.”
