Liverpool make shock appointment
THE LATE Bill Shankly has been officially unveiled
as the new manager of Liverpool FC after the premature retirement
of Gerard Houllier.
Shankly has shunned the world of football for
many years, and returns to the club some twenty years after
departing this life. He spent his first day back on the job,
very quietly overseeing training with the players before being
paraded shoulder-high by four board members at a press conference.
The chairman of the club, David Moores, explained
that the idea came to him after reading a biography of the
former Reds manager. I was particularly impressed with
Bills single-minded attitude and I felt that he had
left the door open for us to make an approach for his services
if they were ever required.
We made our decision after looking at
the teams recent performance. Although Mr Houllier was
suffering from crippling ill-health this season, the team
performed impressively possibly spurred on by a desire
to impress their ailing boss. We suspect that appointing a
manager who is not merely at deaths door, but some way
beyond it, is the logical step forward.
Bob Paisley, the former Liverpool manager who
died in 1996, declined the opportunity to comment no
comment, remaining stiff-lipped about rumours that he
has been approached with regard to the deputy managers
position.
