Road Test with Andy McNabb
This week SAS combat veteran Andy
McNabb tests out the Ford Focus LX 1.5, by commandeering
it from a wealthy Sheik and using it to escape from some Iraqi
soldiers.
Performance 6/10
The 2.0 litre engine proved powerful enough
when burning off a tank at the lights, but the steering proved
sluggish and unresponsive after we drove it into a sand dune.
Come on Ford, sort it out!
Storage 9/10
The spacious boot has enough room to store
ammunition and anti-tank rounds, and with a simple press of
a switch the rear seats fold down to let you stow even the
longest of rifles. The sunroof proved especially spacious,
giving my mate Martin plenty of room to fire a machine gun
at some unarmed farmers.
Camel Impact Test 7/10
We drove the Focus into a camel at 88
mph, and received only light damage to the front bumper and
wing mirror.
We left the camel for dead, though I did boobytrap
it with a grenade in case any passing soldiers tried to use
the carcass to hide in.
Overall Iraqi Outrunning Capability 9/10
Very good. We did get overtaken by a man on
a motorbike at one point, but the cars sturdy frame
made running him off the road an easy task. A special mention
goes to the electric windows, which made roadside exchanges
of gunfire a joy. Even when we turned the car over in a ditch
it still provided excellent cover from a sniper, and the range
of cheerful colours makes the car easy to spot from the air.
