We love this reply by Barry Norman to two drunk blokes who asked him to be their ‘honorary uncle’

RIP Barry Norman, who died in his sleep on Friday night aged 83.

We’ve got our own memories of the great man – mostly between Film 82 and film 90 – but none to match this.

In the pair’s original letter, they wrote:

“We both have uncles of our own, who are adequate in their own way, but who are lamentably unable to keep up interesting conversations on the subjects about which which we are passionate, films and sport.

“We feel that to have you as an honorary uncle would compensate us for this rather miserable deprivation in our upbringing.

“Your duties would not be arduous – they would include being knowledgable, charming and compassionate and generally avuncular at all times when in front of the camera.

“For our part, we would diligently set about telling people what a terrific show yours is and what a splendid sort of chap you are to have as an honorary relative.”

And Barry Norman’s reply.

And why not?

Remember the great man with these memories from his last ever film review show on BBC1. Marvellous.

Finally, a lovely BBC tribute.
