This is the extraordinary moment Greg Gianforte, Republican candidate for Montana’s congressional seat, ‘body slammed’ Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs.

Here’s what Jacobs said later (in an ambulance on his way to hospital).

“He took me to the ground. I think he wailed on me once or twice … He got on me and I think he hit me … This is the strangest thing that has ever happened to me in reporting on politics.”

Gianforte is a tech millionaire who is backed by Donald Trump, in case you’re wondering. His campaign spokesman blamed Jacobs’ “aggressive behaviour” (we must have missed that on the tape).

The Republican candidate has since been charged with misdemeanour assault. 2017, everyone!
