This BBC Radio Leeds “tribute” to Ian Brady has to be heard to be believed – it’s like Brass Eye but it’s real

In a remarkable lapse of taste Nathan Turvey on BBC Radio Leeds has broadcast a light entertainment game segment based on moors murderer Ian Brady.

Yes, that’s right – he asks the listeners to guess what the news story is by playing a series of related songs.

“And here are your musical clues”, Nathan Turvey says in a chirpy local radio voice, “all linked to someone well known who has been in the news this week.”

Songs include:

  • All The Young Dudes – Mott The Hoople
  • Theme tune to The Brady Bunch
  • Suffer Little Children – The Smiths
  • Psycho Killer – Talking Heads

    Take a listen:

And the reaction on social media is a mixture of disbelief and laughter.

“Oh man, I’m clearly evil. I think the Radio Leeds thing is really funny. Mainly because it’s played absolutely straight.” says @Mumoss.

    “What next @RadioLeeds ? A musical quiz about Auschwitz ?” writes @Fartelengelbert.

Oh god and there’s more. Here’s the bit where they announce the winners:

“Radio Leeds thing is mindboggling” writes @Mumbler3.

We have to wonder if Nathan Turvey is going be working in Radio for much longer. But if you are going self-sabotage your career then it’s quite a way to go.
