Is this the biggest Oscars blunder Of All Time?

In what’s being called the biggest screw-up in Oscars history, the wrong best picture winner was announced due to a mix-up with the envelopes.

In extraordinary scenes – mid-way through La La Land’s acceptance speech, the film’s producer Jordan Horowitz interrupted and had to explain the error, and awarded the Oscar to its rightful owner: Moonlight.

‘There’s been a mistake,’ he explained. ‘Moonlight, you guys won best picture.’ adding: ‘This is not a joke.’

The stars and producers of La La Land then handed their trophies to the stars of Moonlight.

Here’s the moment it all went wrong…

Earlier Warren Beatty, presenting with Faye Dunaway, had been seen fumbling genuinely trying to find the right envelope:

The look on Meryl Streep’s face pretty much summed up the moment for everyone.

And here’s what it felt like backstage. Never has an Oscars commentary felt more like something out of WWE wrestling.

The best possible explanation is this…

Though there were other theories…

Congratulations Moonlight!

So how did it happen?

Warren Beatty revealed that he had been handed the best actress envelope by mistake. It said “Emma Stone, La La Land” which is why he hesitated so long and Dunaway ended up reading out the wrong movie.

Except Emma Stone said SHE had the best actress envelope.

While they get the team from CSI to investigate – half of them were in the room, right? – here’s some of our favourite reactions on Twitter.

With a grim sense of inevitability, Donald Trump wasn’t far from some people’s thoughts.

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway starred together in Bonnie and Clyde, of course.

We love everything about Warren Beatty’s reaction, from looking inside to see if there was anything else in the envelope, to basically just handing it to Faye Dunaway and letting her sort it out.

Here’s the official statement from the people responsible for getting this sort of thing right. Basically, ‘we cocked up’.

And just in case we forget about everything else that happened last night, it was a pretty extraordinary night for Oscar all round.
