Finally, New Yorkers have a monument to the 400 people killed by a giant octopus in 1963

A memorial has been unveiled to mark the death of 400 people dragged to a watery grave when their ferry was attacked by a giant-octopus on November 22nd, 1963, reports the NYPost.

The octopus attacked and sank the Cornelius G. Kolff, a Staten Island Ferry boat on the same day that JFK was assassinated in Dallas. And no it didn’t actually happen (the octopus attack, fairly sure JFK is dead).

It’s the work of artist Joe Reginella, who also produced a glossy brochure for the “Staten Island Ferry Disaster Memorial Museum” which boasts an octopus petting zoo, historical exhibits and a “Ferry Disastore” gift shop.

Here’s a short documentary on the most mysterious maritime disaster in NYC history that never happened.
