School kids stunned by surprise ‘canteen opera’

School lunches are seldom something to sing home about, but for pupils and teachers at a Buckinghamshire primary school, a simple plate of pesto pasta took on operatic proportions as they were treated to an impromptu performance.

Secret opera singers, disguised as canteen staff broke into song bringing the lunch hall to a standstill with a rousing medley of the Italian classics by Verdi, Rossini and Puccini.

The performance was orchestrated by premium Italian food brand Sacla’ who brought the spirit of Italy and the passion of the opera to an otherwise rather ordinary lunch hall.

From soaring soprano to booming baritone, the singers’ stunning performance thrilled the unsuspecting school children, aged 7 -11 years old, whose shocked and surprised reactions were captured on camera.

Clare Blampied, MD of Sacla’ UK, who organised the surprise performance, said: “Sacla’ aims to bring home the spirit of Italy and inject Italian passion and flair into the everyday lives of people of all ages. We wanted to share the power of opera with children who have never seen or heard it before live and their reactions were incredible as our undercover opera singers gave them an Italian dining experience to remember. This comes at a time when we are launching our new food-service range, so it is a particularly special time of celebration.”
