Facebook Profile Wins Man Booker Prize For Fiction

Literary News: A man’s Facebook profile is so full of fictional events, feelings and thoughts that it has scooped the Man Booker Prize.

Judges described ‘Facebook Profile’ by Barry Katha as a ‘dazzling fictional journey’ through a ‘far more interesting life than anyone could ever dream to live’.

Judges praised Katha’s profile for the magical realism of Salman Rushdie, mixed with the rich comic style of Kingsley Amis and stream of consciousness that won James Kelman the award in 1994.

Critics highlighted one part of the profile that detailed a holiday to the Isle of Wight.

“The way he said the bad weather wasn’t getting anyone down was wonderful,” said judge and broadcaster Martha Kearney. “When he said he loved sitting in the car with his family eating sandwiches while it pissed down with rain you could almost believe him.”

“The way he so masterfully ‘liked’ various intellectual foreign language films really gave a sense of depth to the character,” said fellow judge Natalie Hayes. “Facebook Profile is simply the most inspiring piece of fiction I’ve read in recent years.”
