Local News Programmes Running Out Of Heatwave Clichés

Regional news teams from around the UK say they are ‘dangerously close’ to running out of clichéd ideas to illustrate the heatwave on TV every single day.

“You can only hang around in parks or swimming pools filming half naked sunseekers for so long before it starts to look a bit dodgy,” said Damien Varmega, a producer on BBC South East Today.

“Obviously we have to mention the weather every single night and now we’ve filmed people swimming, sunbathing, eating ice creams and splashing around in fountains, we’re getting dangerously low on new ways of showing the same thing.”

The Met Office predicts that after the slight drop this weekend, temperatures are expected to rise to again next week.

“If this goes on much longer we’ll have exhausted every possible lighthearted way of showing how local people cool off,” said Varmega. “We’ll be reduced to showing a sweating man silently pointing at a thermometer and shrugging for five minutes every night.”
