Newsreaders Assure Public They’ll Be Able To Pronounce Icelandic Volcanoes This Summer

News News: Newsreaders say that have taken ‘drastic steps’ to ensure the correct pronunciation of erupting volcanoes in Iceland this year.

“2010 took us completely by surprise,” said the BBC’s Huw Edwards. “None of us had ever heard of Eyjafjallajökull let alone said it out loud before, causing widespread chaos in newsrooms throughout the whole summer.”

“The BBC has hired a team of Icelandic dialogue coaches and all of the presenters have been training hard through the winter. I myself even flew out to Iceland in order to stand on the rim of the crater and yell ‘Eyjafjallajökull’ into the molten lava below.”

The cost of news disruption resulting from the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in April 2010 is estimated at between £1 and £1.5 billions pounds, with newsreaders stuttering and fudging the pronunciation, leaving millions of viewers unsure exactly what was going on.

“I thought Kay Burley was having a stroke,” remembers one concerned Sky News viewer. “The way she mangled those vowels almost had me calling 999 on her behalf.“
