20th June 1993 News: Scientists have confirmed that the world wide web will be getting a third site for users to browse within the next six months.
The scientists who control what is referred to as ‘the web’ – a series of computers connected through phone lines – say the ‘site’ will be online before Christmas, though they have yet to confirm exactly what the site will be – rumours suggest it might contain digital versions of photographs that users can view or ‘download’ to their personal computers.
“I just hope this doesn’t place unnecessary strain on the internet,” warned expert Matthew Gray.
“We already have two sites for people to look at. What if a third site causes telephone lines to melt, or sucks people into the cyber-world, like in that Lawnmower Man film that just came out?”
Aside from overloading the internet, others have expressed doubts about the overwhelming amount of data a third website will provide.
“I’m concerned this third website might make things difficult to find on the world wide web,” said Dr. William W. Gopher. “There will just be too much information – how will we find anything? Clearly someone needs to invent some kind of ‘search tool’ as soon as possible.”
